Mentors Make a Difference

The summer PR internship is a coveted and competitive opportunity. As our Agency is in the midst of evaluating candidates, I began to reminisce about my first summer internship after college and one of the amazing mentors I was fortunate enough to meet.

I landed a dream internship working for a Boston PR firm on the Fleet Bank All-Stars program. The firm devised a program to give local community service organizations free money to improve their communities, as part of a regional cause marketing program. My job involved working independently out of the Long Island and NYC Fleet offices with their community relations managers to promote the program and build participation. I was fortuitously introduced to a seasoned community relations executive by the name of Elena Perez.

Elena helped me to stage photo ops, edit my media advisories, figure out MS Word and navigate media relations. She also gave me an opportunity to learn about her job as a community relations manager and how she selected organizations who wanted financial support from the bank. It was one of the most memorable work experiences I’ve ever had, and even with the completion of the internship, Elena continued to mentor me throughout my career.

As I joined Emanate, I was excited to let her know that I would be working on Bank of America, which she now worked for as well. Unfortunately, she passed away suddenly before I could share the news. To this day, I recall fondly the career advice she provided to me as a young, impressionable intern. She instilled in me an appreciation for enjoying life, delivering thorough, error-free documents and an appreciation for adapting my work style to many different kinds of personalities.

Elena’s friendship, patience and wisdom continue to be treasured. This former NY metro area Fleet All-Stars Field Liaison would not be an Emanate VP at PR Week’s 2010 Agency of the Year without the insights and lessons she imparted. Thank you Elena for everything you did for me.
